“I answered them by saying, ‘The God of heaven will give us success. We his servants will start rebuilding, but as for you, you have no share in Jerusalem or any claim or historic right to it.’”

Nehemiah 2:20
Two voices met the ears of Nehemiah. There was the voice of the Lord, which offered him hope and carried him through his trials. And there was the voice of his enemies—God’s enemies—that not only challenged him, but sought to cloud truth with deceit by accusing Nehemiah of rebelling against the king.

Though we hold fast to God’s Word as Christians, many other voices will be raised up to tempt us, deceive us, and confuse us. At root, it is Satan’s voice behind them, seeking to undermine our trust in the Lord and His Word. Sadly, Satan often finds easy access to our hearts due to our own willingness to indulge sin and deceit.

Knowing this sad reality, we must return constantly to the Word of God which stills our hearts and directs our paths. We must use it as the lamp to our feet that Psalm 119:105 says it is. Nehemiah repeated God’s Word in the face of his enemies— something that Jesus would later do before Satan. And it is Jesus who has the final word. If we are in Christ, we may occasionally be deceived, but we will never be defeated.
